About the Event
Did you know that we all have a superpower – EMPATHY?! It helps us all understand and connect to each other much better. It grows the more we practice it, so join Paul Jenkins hosting with EmpathyLab and authors Sharna Jackson and Helen Rutter to find out more about how to boost your empathy powers through reading and get creative with three fantastic activities, like wearing Empathy Glasses.
Be Prepared
In the event, Paul, Sharna and Helen will show you their super Empathy Glasses and share their empathy resolutions. To join in and create your own, download the Empathy Glasses template here and the empathy resolution template here.
About the Authors
Sharna Jackson is an award-winning author and curator who specialises in developing socially-engaged initiatives for children across culture, publishing and entertainment. She was recently the Artistic Director at Site Gallery in Sheffield, and was formerly the editor of the Tate Kids website. Sharna's debut novel High-Rise Mystery received numerous awards and accolades including the Waterstones Book Prize for the Best Book for Younger Readers. Sharna lives on a ship in Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
Helen Rutter lives in the countryside just outside Sheffield with her comedian husband, two children and two dogs, Ronnie and Billy Whizz. When she is not tapping away in her writing room, she loves walking the dogs, playing board games and reading. Before writing her first novel, The Boy Who Made Everyone Laugh, Helen wrote and performed her work on the stage and has even braved some stand up comedy.

About the Festival Partner
This event has been programmed by Empathy Lab
EmpathyLab’s mission is to raise an empathy-educated generation, because empathy is a quality of character that can change the world. Every January it launches a Read For Empathy collection of books for 4-16 year olds, and in June runs Empathy Day. The organisations’s in-depth schools programme helps schools improve pupils’ empathy and literacy skills and their social activism.
